Critic's Review

This is one of those places that really irritates me. You've got all these backwards baseball cap kids on Yelp swooning over how great this place is. You wonder if they've ever been anywhere other than Subway before in their entire lives. There's plenty of Sub shops around, so you just wonder what they're thinking.

The first thing you notice about My Market is that its a dump. Its really a convenience store in the middle of a somewhat shady neighborhood west of Andrews on E 17th Street. There's a pretty blue collar crowd milling around; there aren't a lot of other places around here. Up front this is your standard convenience store. In the back there's a few tables and a deli counter.

My Market Inside

The big problem with this place is that its like eating in a 7/11. The first time I came here was about 3:30 and there was nobody there. I was shocked at how bad it was.

Since that day I was a major basher of My Market. But after hearing another raving review from someone a bit more credible, I decided to try it again.

This time it was lunchtime and the place was pretty crowded. I ordered a small Italian Sub with the works. Now this should mean a fully loaded Italian sub, but they asked me about 10 questions anyway. I opted for everything; hot peppers on the side. It took a while to make it, but finally it was ready.

Now you don't pay at the Deli counter; you bring the food up and pay at the cashier, even if you eat in. Its kind of strange having a bunch of guys on line with empty plates, but thats how it works.

When I opened the sub, it was clearly different from the sandwich I'd gotten here previously. This thing was a mess. The oil was dripping out and it was just stuffed with all kinds of stuff. This is the first Italian sub I've gotten in Fort Lauderdale that was made with black olives. Its not technically wrong, but its not usual. They asked about all kinds of things, but didn't ask if I wanted black olives or not. Very curious.

My Market Italian Mess

What was missing was banana peppers; a critical ingredient to me. I tasted the sandwich first, and then added some banana peppers I had in the fridge. Much better with the peppers.

My conclusion here is that the name of the place is a fallacy. This is NOT a deli; it's a sub shop. They really have no idea how to make deli sandwiches. I didn't see anyone eating pastrami or chicken salad or cole slaw. This is a sub shop; pure and simple. I give the subs 3.5 stars and the deli sandwiches 1 star. With LaSpada opening up on E17th Street shortly, soon there will be no reason to venture into this neighborhood at all.

Review 6/15/09

This place is what happens when you rely on Yelp for your reviews. The high ratings there prompted me to venture into a somewhat shady neighborhood to check it out. The verdict: The place is a dump.

Now sometimes dumps have great food, but this isn't one of those places. The menu has all sorts of clever sandwiches at prices that aren't so reasonable, at least not for a dump. I judge a deli by its chicken salad, so I orderd a chicken salad on rye. They don't have regular sandwiches listed on their menu, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The price: $6.99. I was thinking, why is a 6" hoagie and a sandwich on rye the same price; this thing must really be stuffed!

My Market Chicken Salad

Wrong again, as the picture indicates, I got an understuffed sandwich; no pickle. The sandwich is kind of a joke.

They do use Boars Head meat but you can get a better sub with Boars Head at Publix. I ordered a 12 inch sub with side of potato salad and it cost me about $12, overpriced.
