Critic's Review

You gotta love a place with a slogan: "When it comes to food, we don't clown around".

Bozo's is a yesteryear leftover in a part of town where there's no reason to ever go if you don't live there. As with most of these old-time places, this place as big a dump as could be. Inside, they have 3 refrigerators; the kind you'd have in a modest home, fans everywhere. There's no air conditioning at Bozo's.

Bozos inside

I decided on getting a pastrami sandwich; I ordered it with swiss cheese and mustard. There are no chairs inside Bozo's, so you can either go out into the heat or stand in front of a fan. It took about 10 minutes to make the sandwich. No other customers in site for miles.

Bozos pastrami

The pastrami was dried out; I'm not sure if it was because they grilled it, or it just wasn't good pastrami. This wasn't a very good sandwich. It didn't taste that bad, but it wasn't the way a good pastrami sandwich is supposed to taste.

Previously, I'd gotten an Italian Sub at Bozo's.

At first glance, I was ready to crown Bozo's the king of Fort Lauderdale Sub Shops. From a pure portion standpoint, this sandwich is a 5 star deal. The meats are fresh and the sandwich is stuffed to the max.

Unfortunately, there were some issues. They had mis-sliced the bread (see lower right) in such a way that there was only a thin piece on one side which made it difficult to eat. The tomatoes weren't ripe enough and the lettuce wasn't fresh. The dressing used was a bit sweet; but still it was a very good sandwich. I can't give 4 stars for yellow lettuce and half-ripe tomatoes. Also, using not-so-ripe tomatoes is a service issue; the preparer makes the choice to put them on the sandwich instead of discarding them in favor of riper slices. But you certainly get your money's worth here.
