Critic's Review

No time for lunch today. Decided to get a salad an Pizza Fusion. I checked out there menu and the Tuscan Salad looked interesting.

The place hasn't changed a bit in 5 years. TV on cartoons. I ordered a small Tuscan salad to go. They only have Ranch, Caesar or Balsamic dressing; its pretty lame for a place that specializes in salads to not have Italian in any form. I asked for Caesar on the side, figuring I could use some of my own oil and vinegar at home.

It's amazing to me that this place is still open. You never hear anyone talk about it. It's so leftover from yesterday. I think the Red Cow was Johnny Cocktails when they opened. They still have the "awards" they won 8 years ago. They had a banner made, back when New Times was the only thing to read.

I got the salad and headed home. Here is the menu description of the salad.

Arugula, romaine, pan-roasted steak, cucumber, zucchini, red onion, gorgonzola, tomato wedges and crostini.

I opened the salad. Didn't look too bad, except there was no arugula, which is a pretty key ingredient with Tuscan Steak. The steak also didn't look freshly prepared.

I tasted the meat. EEEEK. It was cold and inedible. I smelled it, and tasted it again. I couldn't figure out if it was spoiled or just marinated in something foul. Either way, I wasn't going to eat the meat. The "crostini" were just toasted bread, so I didn't want that either.

So after removing the meat and bread, now I had some unripe tomatoes and zucchini that looked like it has been marinating since Thanksgiving, so that needed to go also.

I added some of my own tomatoes and cut it up.

Do you see any arugula in there? None at all. So I was left with pretty much the salad I make for myself 3-4 times a week, with my own dressing. What a deal.

I did taste the caesar and it was a good dressing. Wouldn't have gone well with this salad, however.

Conclusion

I despised the concept of this place when it was ahead of it's time, but this place has ceased to even be an option for a simple salad. How hard is it to marinate some beef in lemon and olive oil and grill it? How could you leave out the main ingredient in a salad?

I always thought this place was a sham. I don't know why anyone goes here. They can't even make a salad. I also don't think that everything is organic. I think they're full of crap.

Review 9/30/10

Pizza fusion

I wasn't very hungry today, so I decided to try Pizza Fusion. I've tried it before, but I felt I owed myself the full experience. I wasn't going to order anything crazy; I just wanted to compare it to other pizza. The concept here is to use the word "organic" to get people to pay more for bad food that they wouldn't order if it wasn't "organic". It works at whole foods, so why not with pizza too?

And why is "green" so darn ugly? The inside has green plastic chairs and reclaimed wood tables and some booths with really ugly upholstery.

As I entered I was greeted with an annoyance; they have a lunch special which is $4.99 for a personal pizza and a salad, which is $1 less than the price for a take out pizza. This sort of thing really irritates me, because I didn't want to eat on the green plastic chairs. It also illustrates that $6 is way too much for a pizza if they're happily giving it to you for $4. I guess they hope you buy some overpriced beverage; but it didn't seem right to have to pay more for just the pizza if you take out.

It takes about 10 minutes for them to make this thing, which I loosely refer to as a pizza.

Pizzafusion pizza

At first glance it sort of looks like a pizza, but its certainly not very exciting. I had a piece in the car; its not a terrible tasting pizza, but the crust is so thin and stiff that it kind of ruins the experience. I had a stop to make and then had the rest when I got home. As the pizza cooled, the crust became harder and harder. This isn't the kind of pizza you can eat cold.

As you can see, this is about as little stuff that they can put on a pizza and still have it look like a pizza. Like I said, I wasn't very hungry. For $6 you don't get a lot of food, and it doesn't taste very good. But its organic, so I guess that makes it all OK.
