Critic's Review

The first question I had about this place was about the name: is it Sukho Thai, or Sukhothai; the latter I can't get past calling it Suke-hot-thai, which is clearly wrong. But I digress.

I have a friend who knows Thai food who says that Sukhothai used to be a lot better. I'm not sure how much weight I give to that, sometimes things just lose their luster as you get used to them. But I deal with the here and now, so no matter what he says.

Inside the place is black. Black walls, black tables. Some black benches in the front. I walked in to pick up some take out with my sunglasses on and I couldn't see a thing.

Something you need to know is that they serve lunch, but they close at 2:30. And I don't mean that they'll seat you at 2:30; they lock the doors at 2:30. In my case, they locked the door at 2:26. They really want to get out of there at 2:30, so plan accordingly.

You wonder how places can stay in business so long without running their business properly. They have a web site that has no mention of a lunch menu whatsoever. They have about 75% of their dinner menu on the lunch menu and its quite a bit less expensive; but someone using their web site as a reference would think that prices were almost double what they actually are.

I'm not an adventurous Thai food eater so I just got some Red Curry. You can tell a lot about a thai restaurant by the way they prepare this most popular dish. Unlike some other places, they asked how much spice I wanted. I went with medium.

Sukhothai container

Their take out boxes are a bit of a problem as the paper cover on the aluminum container degrades a bit around the edges; and this stuff is still hot enough to burn you a good 15 minutes after picking it up. It must be bubbling hot when they pack it up.

Sukhothai curry

The curry itself is pretty spicy; much better than others I've received recently. They make it with red, green, yellow and orange peppers, plenty of chicken, bamboo shoots, peas and zucchini. There's a nice balance of vegetables. BayShore had way too many bamboo shoots. This was better.

Its a small sample, but the food was fine. Nothing great, nothing bad. It came in at $7.95 for lunch, and it was a pretty good sized portion. Not dirt cheap but not too expensive either. Very middle of the road.

You ate there just in time because apparently they're permanently closed now. Not a surprise for me, the place had way too many health / restaurant inspection violations for me to ever eat there... at one time about 35+.
