Critic's Review

I see the commercials for Popeye's on TV, and I have to admit they got me. I'd never been to a Popeye's before; I pass the ones on Broward Blvd and Sunrise all the time. Today I was pressed for time, so I ran over for some quick take out.

I knew nothing about the menu, so I checked out the web site. They have "naked" tenders, which are chicken tenders in cajun spices without the breading. I figured I'd try a little of this and a little of that.

They're also advertising a special of garlic pepper chicken combo for $3.99 with 3 tenders, fries and drink with a dipping sauce. I didn't really want the drink, but for $3.99 what the heck. Except when I got to the store; nothing was as expected.

I expected it to be a dreary fast food joint. But I didn't expect a lot of other things. They only have combos; you can just get the chicken and you have to pay for an unwanted drink. They don't have the unbreaded chicken. And the item that is nationally advertised at $3.99 is $5.49 at this location. Not exactly Las Olas, so why the higher price? Regular 3 piece chicken combos are $7.95. Obviously I couldn't sample multiple things. So I ordered a 3 piece spicy tender combo with cajun rice and sweet tea.

They give you a massive cup and you fill it up yourself; while I was filling a box appeared on a tray in front of me. "Take Out", I said. They whisked it into the back and put it in a bag.

I tasted the tea on the way home. Holy cow, it was all sugar. When you see one of those people who are so fat you can't imagine how they got that fat, look no further. There's probably as much sugar in one of these teas as in a half gallon of ice cream.

When I got home and opened the box, I saw regular chicken; not tenders.

Popeyes chicken

Great. Ok, well chicken is chicken. I tasted the bisquit. It wasn't bad. Better than some bisquits you get. The rice was kind of strange. At least it wasn't all glopped together, but it had a musty taste. Certainly not spicy.

And the Chicken. Well the chicken is junk. Not spicy. Not Juicy. Not Tasty. Not good at all. Frankly, this is no better than random chicken you might get in some cafeteria or in a supermarket.

Don't be fooled by the advertisements. There's nothing "Louisiana" about this. This stuff is garbage.

Your review on Popeye's is totally different than my experience. For one, I always get the tea 1/2 and 1/2 (sweet and unsweet) Also, if you asked for spicy you would have received spicy chicken. The spicy is why I go to Popeye's. The red beans and rice and the coleslaw are the sides to get. The biscuits with honey (asked for) are terrific. Everything else is just OK.
