Critic's Review

I was checking out the Yellow Green Market in Hollywood, and decided to try the Chillbar for Brunch. They're only open on Saturday and Sundays when the Market is open, so they serve brunch and omelets whenever they're opened.

They close at 4, but at 3:10 the hostess looked like she was packing up. There were a bunch of tables, but she didn't seem keen on seating me. She suggested the bar, as all bad hostesses do, and I declined as I peered in at multiple empty small tables. Finally she gave me a bad table right under the counter, where I'd get to listen to what turned out to be a very chaotic staff try to manage a cafe.

Chill Bar Inside

You don't expect people to be dressed up at a Green Market, but this place defines casual. Lots of dogs; a surprising number of people drinking $10 mimosas. There's a woman in rags wearing a Tiara. It would be kind of entertaining if I weren't sitting on bad patio furniture.

A server drops off some water with a cucumber in it. Plain would have been better, but it was drinkable.

I look at the menu and see that it's $18 for an omelet. $7 for hot tea. I think I'll pass on the coffee. I'm thinking of leaving without ordering. Do I want to sit in this uncomfortable place and pay NYC prices? I take a look at the omelets and see that the menu has a Creole theme. I ordered the New Orleans omelet, which is described as crawfish etouffee with shrimp in a spicy creole sauce.

Service here is random and chaotic. The worst part of it is that the entire operation is exposed to customers; in most restaurants the kitchen chaos is hidden from the customers. Here, you have people yelling at each other; and the noise is constant.

No bread or anything while waiting. I guess you're supposed to sip your $10 mimosa. Finally a plate was dropped in front of me.

ChillBar New Orleans Omelet

A nice looking plate. Luckily they didn't ruin the salad by putting the "chutney" on the plate. Etouffee means "smothered", so technically it should be over something, but no matter. this was pretty good. Not spicy as advertised, but a well prepared omelet overall, with nice tender crawfish and shrimp.

Polenta has never interested me. Give me some home fries or hash browns please.

The croissant was light but needed some butter; flagging down a server wasn't easy as they randomly flew around the space. Finally I got a couple of ice cold pats of butter and figured out a way to get some onto the roll.

Anyone who reads this site regularly knows how I feel about weeds as a salad, but his was ok and paired surprising well with the omelet.

I'm not a fan of chutneys nor do I mix fruit with protein; this tasted like apple pie filling.

I left this on the plate. I was pretty anxious to get out of this place; I had no idea if they took credit cards or not. As it turns out they use the Square, which is kind of awkward in a restaurant. I'm not really interested in handling my server's iphone. They hand you the phone and you have to sign with your finger; they've already added the tip. There's no printer, so you have to enter your email as well to get a receipt.

Not only do they add a 20% tip, but they add it after the tax, so the effective tip is over 21%.

While the food was good, when you consider that it's $28 for an omelet and a mimosa, I can think of 75 places that I'd rather go. Brunch is supposed to be about relaxing, and this place is too disorganized for me to want to spend any quality time.

Also, when you go to a Green Market you're probably trying to save some money, and there are a lot of places to get some food for $5-$10. If you plucked this place from Western Hollywood and put it in the old Las Olas Cafe space, it would still be overpriced. And still very, very strange.
