Critic's Review
Another VooDoo BBQ opened in Hollywood; this place has the same ownership as the one on Andrews Ave in the location previously occupied by Mama Fu's. I've been to the other location a couple of times, with mixed feelings.
This first thing I have to say is that the trip here really sucked. It took me an hour and 20 minutes to go 9 miles to get take out; I hit 3 draw bridges, a Tri Rail and some sort of police action on 95. Completely unacceptable.
These are franchises, so they come with a decor kit that makes all of the restaurants similar.
Like the other one, this is one big room with a lot of table and booths. It kind of straddles fast food decor; a bit better, but not much.
I didn't know that it was the same ownership, so I ordered some gumbo to see if it was different, as well as 1/4 lb of brisket and 1/2 chicken. $16 and change; it certainly isn't cheap BBQ.
This gumbo was a larger portion and much more gumbo-like in that it was thicker than the stuff I got on Andrews. It wasn't very spicy, and the rice was clumped into balls; they didn't take much care in making the soup; like stirring it once in a while. It wasn't terrible but I won't be ordering it again.
The brisket was very dry and not very flavorful. The brisket is a loser.
The "cajun" chicken had virtually no "cajun" flavor. I couldn't even taste anything special on the skin. It was just like a roasted chicken you'd get at La Granja.
At 4.99 this is a particularly lousy value; considering that you could get a nice, moist whole rotisserie chicken at a supermarket for $6.
From a macro standpoint, this just wasn't enough food for $16. I liked the meat at the other location. But this order wasn't very impressive.
