Using the Nearby Feature

It's come to my attention that the "Nearby" feature may be somewhat misunderstood, so I thought I'd add some insight. While using your cell phone to determine your position is useful (when the GPS is reporting accurately), it's also a useful feature for finding places that are near other places.

For Example, suppose you heard that Rocco's Tacos was a cool place, but you wanted to see what else was nearby so you could maybe go to a few places without having to move your car. So if you're reading the Rocco's Tacos page, you'll see a blue button titled "Use This as My Location"

Roccos page

Press the button, and you should get a popup alert telling you that your location as been set to Rocco's.

So now the site will treat you the same as if you were on your cell phone at Rocco's. Click the What's Nearby link at the top of the page, and you'll see all of the venues sorted in order by distance.

Using the Location Map

If you don't have a specific place in mind, you can use the map. On the sidebar of the What's Nearby page, you'll see a button labeled "Use Map". Pressing that button pulls up the map page, which is centered in the middle of Fort Lauderdale by default. You can zoom out the map with the little minus sign, and place the red marker anywhere on the map. The Latitude and Longitude will show up at the bottom of the map.

Press Save Location and you should get the "Location Set" popup again. Then use What's Nearby to see what's near where you placed the marker.

It's pretty useful, particularly when you can't remember the name of that pizza place, but you know that it's right next to some restaurant. Note that you can type in an address into the field on the map and press the Get Location button. You can also enter the names of things, but it has to be exact, so just type in the first word or 2. Doing spelling and word ordering is beyond the scope of this project. Addresses should work well, however.
