Critic's Review
I had to go up to Boca for something, so I thought I'd try this new Mexican Place. Formerly an outdated Italian Restaurant, Campagnolo's, I'd seen the menu and the prices seemed good; particularly for Boca Raton.
The place was pretty dead; they have no web presence so it's likely that few know they're open. There was 1 table occupied. There was no hostess; I peeked into the bar; it's very nice, but it didn't seem staffed for lunch.
Finally a hostess/server showed up and grabbed a menu. What was strange is that she followed me rather than lead me to a table. I headed over to a booth and settled in.
Chips and salsa come out right way.
The chips were crisp and fresh; the salsa was very good, semi-spicy. But there wasn't much stuff in it; it was mostly liquid.
It's not too easy to scoop up liquid with a tortilla chip. Tea was delivered in a tall glass.
They have no lunch menu, but their combos are lunch priced, with several choices for $8.95. I ordered the Chile Relleno / Enchilada combo with a chicken enchilada. You can get the combos with pinto beans or refried.
Music here is festive, with Pedro Infante, Los Tigres Del Norte and some Mariachi music playing at a fairly high volume.
The food came out in about 5 minutes, on a red-hot plate.
This was the typical combo plate. no scrimping on portions. Not bad for $9.95. I dug into the enchilada first; the chicken was packed tight. The sauce didn't taste like much. I'm not sure why I keep ordering chicken enchiladas. They never arouse me much.
The relleno was good in that the peppers were cooked just right. Sometimes they overcook them and they just get mushy. There wasn't much cheese inside, which was disappointing. This would have been excellent with more cheese.
The rice didn't taste like much and I left most of it on the plate.
I would describe the service here as overly doting. The asked me how everything was way too many times. and twice removed a glass of ice tea that was more than half full from the table to fill up the glass. Get a pitcher so I don't have to sit there with nothing to drink while you fill up the glass. Better than bad service, but they need to be seen and not heard a bit more. I'll flag you down if I need something.
Conclusion
This is no Roccos Tacos, which is a corporate chain run by a bunch of guys from Long Island. This is your typical Mexican restaurant with employees who speak some English and who serve a full, fairly priced menu of Mexican dishes. It's certainly a good value, particularly in the heart of overpriced Boca.
