Critic's Review

The new owners got bamboozled and were out of business quickly. It's back to being Mexican Takeout.

******************************

I went into Dixie Tracks when they first opened and it didn't seem like the kind of place I'd want to go; this was Burrito Loco and a Schnitzel place previously; it's a very small space. Recently, owners Kareem and Ned have teamed with Andy Patton, former GM at Sea Level and Manager at Steak 954 and are opening The Rusty Hook Tavern in the old Joe's Riverside Grill space. So I wanted to try some food.

They're open until 3pm; after braving way too much traffic, I walked in at 2:30pm sharp. "Are you doing take-out" I was asked. "No, I'm eating in".

I get a piece of paper covered in plastic with the menu; it's smaller than the one on their web site. I didn't really want a sandwich, but they didn't have much else. I wasn't going to have a salad.

They have specials up on blackboard all across the top of the room; with no prices. Really? Do I have to ask what each one costs?

I asked about the Pulled Pork sandwich as I wanted to try something that required some skill: $12. They have a pulled pork "Philly", so i didn't need the Caesar Salad if I wanted that. I ended up ordering the "Jerk Chicken Philly Cheesesteak".

Dixie Tracks Cafe Ice Tea

This is a bring your own Splenda establishment. I went for a bit of sugar.

Music is pretty good; Hootie's "Only Wanna Be With You", "Let it Be" and Blues Traveler filled the air. Otherwise, the place is pretty dreary. Like eating at a bar, without the bar.

The girl drops off my sandwich, checks her phone and out the door she goes. Done for the day at 2:45pm. No service for the rest of the meal.

Dixie Tracks Jerk Chicken Philly Cheesesteak

Initially, I thought that the orange squares were unmelted cheese, and I wondered why it wasn't melted. Silly of me to think that a cheesesteak has cheese. It turned on to be mango. No cheese on this cheesesteak.

The menu says that this comes with "homemade spicy ketchup", but there was none of that. Only Heinz. They certainly didn't scrimp on the fries. Not sure what the sprinkle was, but I'm not eating a load of fries these days, so most of them were left uneaten.

Aside from the lack of cheese, the big issue I had was that it wasn't Jerk Chicken. Jerk is spicy, and this was a sweet sauce. Scotch Bonnet is the key ingredient and it's a very hot pepper.

My litmus test for Jerk is if Walkerswood Jerk in a jar is better, then it doesn't measure up. Walkerswood is way better than this.

With no server, there was no-one to give me a refill on the ice tea nor to bring me a check. I paid at the register. At least I saved on the tip.

Conclusion

This is a shoddy operation from head to toe. If they close at 3 and I'm still eating at 3:10, I don't mind if they're sweeping up. But when the help leaves and they're sweeping up at 2:50, that's just a lack of respect for your customers.

While the menu doesn't show cheese as an ingredient for the sandwich I had, they do call it a Cheesesteak. Don't call it a cheesesteak without cheese; and don't call it Jerk if it's not spicy.

I saw a picture of their Gumbo, and it didn't look like gumbo; it was red (Gumbo doesn't have tomatoes) and had some leaves. So this is one of those creative deals where you don't get what you expect. I don't like surprises when I eat out; surprises more often than not ruin a meal.
