Critic's Review

Moe-Moe's is down for the count......

I'd tried to go to this place a few times last summer, and they always seemed to be closed. I wondered if they were out of business. Today I was in the neighborhood so I thought I'd try again. This time the door was open. Inside, the place looks more like a mexican place than a hot dog joint, with a bar up front and tables and chairs throughout the medium sized room.

Moemoes inside

I ordered a NYC dog with no onions (deli mustard and sauerkraut) and a Chicago Dog, loaded. It took a long time to make the food; considering that I was the only person in the place it seemed too long. While I was waiting I noticed all of the signs throughout the place claiming that they sell Nathan's hot dog. On the menu it says that they sell Hebrew National hot dogs. I don't think they're the same. On the menu it says that the Chicago dog is Vienna Beef, but when I got the food, the hot dogs were the same on both. They have a promotion where they give you a corn on the cob for free with any hot dog purchase.

Moe Moes NY and incompetent Chicago dog

As you can see from the picture, they have no idea how to make a Chicago dog. No neon relish, sandwich dills instead of spears (the menu says cucumbers) and they actually used jalepeno peppers instead of sport peppers. It was the most incompetently made Chicago dog that I've ever been served. If you don't have the right ingredients for something, don't sell it to me.

Once I took off the jalepenos it wasn't a terrible dog, but part of the Chicago dog experience is the construction of the thing. This was just a disaster. The dogs are jumbo, and to be fair; the hot dogs themselves were pretty good. The buns were more like kaiser rolls; sturdy and big; a bit more bread than I want with a hot dog.

The corn on the cob was just a waste of time; it was completely water-logged and was just inedible. There's no sense giving away stuff for free if it's just going to get thrown out.

There aren't a lot of places to get hot dogs around here, and maybe if you don't expect hot dogs to be a particular way you might enjoy this. But if you care about your hot dogs; you may very well be disappointed with what you get at this place.
