Critic's Review
One of the bad things about running this site is having to go up to Boca for Sunday Brunch, instead of just going to the Cheesecake Factory that's a block from where I live. But I'd never been to this location and I had a gift card to use, and I noticed that they had some interesting new brunch items.
This CF is even more palatial than the one on Las Olas; it's like some sort of mansion just east of Town Center Mall. Inside it's all marble with vaulted, mural painted ceilings and big pillars. For some reason, really loud music suitable for a younger crowd plays as well, even though there are more gray hairs here than kids.
There were a few people waiting at 1pm, but there were also a lot of tables available. Half of the bar was empty, and it's a nicer bar that then one on Las Olas so I took a seat. Menus were out so I grabbed one. I asked for coffee since I knew I have having breakfast, and then had to decide between the Green Chilaquiles With Carnitas And Eggs and the Baja Chicken Hash. I asked about the Chilaquiles first; the eggs are scrambled. So I opted for the Chicken hash, which they warned me was Spicy. Fine, that's the entire point of ordering it.
One thing is that the bar is very dark. There are no lights in the bar area. There's a 25 foot ceiling. Very fancy, but it's dark. Service was poor; one dude was completely consumed with the service bar, and the other woman there kept running in an out and I had trouble asking for stuff I wanted.
They still serve coffee in clear glass mugs; which I don't like. I also didn't like the coffee. It was awful. Gone are the days where you drink bad coffee at home and restaurant coffee is a treat. It's the opposite now. Restaurants buy cheap coffee and we drink the good stuff at home.
A runner brought out the oversized plate.
I'd seen a photo of this with hash browns; the over roasted potatoes didn't look that good to me. Even in the dark, the hollandaise was orange. Whatever they did to it, it didn't taste like hollandaise. One egg was properly poached while the other was hard boiled. There's chicken chorizo, corn, peppers in it, but it just didn't work. It wasn't spicy. I couldn't detect any cheese. The chorizo was bland. It reminded me of a Denny's skillet; it sounds good but it's just a bunch of stuff when you get it.
Bad coffee, bad potatoes and a dish that was wholly disappointing. And I had to drive up to Boca to get it.
Can you please take a minute to explain how you derive the score?
