The first indication that there was going to be a large crowd came trying to find a parking space. At 6pm, there wasn't a free spot within a 1/2 mile on the southern side of Atlantic. Cars were parked everywhere; even in places where it was obvious that parking wasn't allowed.
The bars and streets were packed with patrons; families and groups of people of all ages attended. Those with strollers found it particularly challenging getting around.
After the lighting ceremony, everyone headed east to the bars and to listen to music that was playing at random spots throughout town. Looking for a table at Sazio? Forgetaboutit.
It was a cool night and I'd ended up parking in a garage that closed promptly at 9pm, so I couldn't hang around too long. Maybe it's a commentary on tough times; when so many people flock to free event with their families. I had thought that Christmas on Las Olas on Tuesday was a madhouse. But this was even crazier.
If you missed the moment, here it is. Santa arrives by chopper at the beginning, and then the tree is lit.
