Critic's Review

The opening of Deck 84 has gotten all of the buzz; Old Calypso is that place on the OTHER side of the bay. Located in the rear of a shopping center, there's plenty of free parking and a complimentary valet.

The be honest, Old Calypso surprised me. It's really a very nice place with a very interesting menu. It reminds me a lot of the Blue Moon Fish Company in Fort Lauderdale. It's a pretty big place, with dark wood, high ceilings and a big semi-circle bar on the right.

They have brunch on both Saturday and Sunday; the menu surprised me as there is no mention of it on their website. The menu is similar to their lunch menu with some additional breakfast items; the Cajun Omelet caught my eye, I wasn't expecting to have breakfast, so I'm glad I waited to order a beverage. I got some coffee, which is served in a dainty little cup with a doily. The omelet had peppers, onions andouille sausage and a piquant sauce. They didn't have home fries; my choices were rice, french fries or mashed potatoes, which are pretty stupid choice to have for eggs, if you ask me. I went with the "twice-baked" mashed. My dad use to eat left-over mashed potatoes for breakfast so I figured it was the closest match.

What I can say about the omelet is that is was nice to have something a bit different. It wasn't as spicy as I'd hoped; where are these places buying their Andouille sausage anyway? Have you heard of Emil's in Pompano? I enjoyed the omelet but it wasn't as fantastic as it could have been. The mashed potatoes were pretty good also, and they have very good coffee here as well.

The crowd here was decidedly older, which may be a result of their general lack of marketing and having to rely on an existing client base. The menu is certainly more interesting than Deck 84, and the view is about the same.
