Critic's Review
Grease was one of the first of the burger bar craze places to open; this one with a prime location on Clematis Street in West Palm. Operated by Big Time Restaurants, It's not clear if they were trying to go for a shoddy 50's look or if they just did a quick makeover; the decor is notable outdated. With big plate glass mirrors behind the bar, a distressed bar and the trademark big city columns painted a putrid orange.
Unlike other Big Time venues, this one has a lot of TVs at the bar. They had to fight tooth and nail to get the owners to install a 2nd set in Fort Lauderdale's Big City Tavern. It doesn't seem like a sports bar, with half of the sets on ESPN billiards with a Duke vs Michigan game in progress. But it does seem like a place to watch some sports.
They have a very good beer menu here; including one of my favorites Abita Turbo Dog. Perfect with a big burger on my cheat day. When I first sat down there was no server in sight. In fact I started to leave when the one bartender they had working popped out. I ordered a straight up cheeseburger medium rare with cheddar cheese.
When he threw a dishrag in front of me i was a bit surprised, but then I noticed that the rollups where also in dishrags. I guess it's all part of the low-key concept. The burger was ready in less than 10 minutes.
Other than a not-so-generous portion of cheese for the extra dollar I paid, the burger had fairly ripe tomatoes, red onions, lettuce and it was a good sized ball of meat. Cutting it in half, it was done just about right.
The bun fell apart easily; it was a messy meal. All in all, a pretty good burger. They have a lot of interesting items on the menu other than burgers. I'm not sure it's worth a trip to WPB, but it's not bad.
