Critic's Review

Boston's on the Beach re-opened on October 21, The nearby Marriott bought the place from the long time owners and they've completely remodeled the entire building. The outside area is currently under construction; they have a big Palapa Hut and outside bar that will be next to the building right on A1A (the outdoor area was previously behind the bar in the alleyway.

The place is a lot nicer than before; it was pretty old looking and now it's clean and more modern; the same Fenway Park / New England Sports theme not withstanding. There are 2 big bars with TVs everywhere.

Boston's Bar area

The larger piece of the L has another bar and a stage at the far end. There's a lot of cool stuff in the place, if you happen to be from Boston or if you're a Red Sox or Patriot's fan. The tables are adorned with newspaper clipping from big sporting events, and each booth has a pretty good sized personal TV.

Boston's Booth

On my first visit, I attended a mock training lunch where the food was au gratis, however I didn't know in advance that I'd only have 2 choices; either a gorgonzola steak salad or a scallops basket. I didn't want deep fried fish, so I opted for the salad. I usually don't order a steak salad; I'm not one who likes my salad and meat on the same plate.

Bostons steaksalad

The salad was served in a big bowl and it was a really big salad; I'd say with 8 ounces of what appeared to be flank steak. It was a bit difficult to cut; I also didn't want the onions, so I unloaded them on a side plate and dug in.

The salad was pretty good; It had a bunch of kalamata olives that I don't particularly care for; and raw green beans that served no purpose. The roasted red pepper, cheese and spicy dressy worked well; the steak leaned rare (ordered medium rare) but it was very good. I'd prefer to have what I want but it was a pretty good salad.

On another visit I sat at the bar and had what I usually have at a sports bar: wings. At this point I questioned whether or not they went too far with their "authenticity"; like Fenway Park, Boston's has bad posts and seats with an obstructed view.

Boston's Obstructed View Seating

The bartender asked if I wanted the wings mild or hot; I usually go for medium. He assured me that hot wasn't too hot, so I went with that. Given the silly obstructions, you can only watch 2 games from any given seat. Not a problem this time of year, but during football season being in the center of the room is probably more desirable.

The wings were ready pretty quickly.

Boston's Wings

They were plump, meaty wings, no breading, messy but not overly so and they gave me plenty of blue cheese in a container big enough to dip the big wings into. All in all, pretty good.

We have been going to Boston's for quite some time. About 6 months before the renovations, the menu changed and it has gone down hill from there. The original menu is what had us bringing people there. No more. Last night we had to wait, (not unusual) there were tables available and were seated as soon as we told them we did not have cell reception. The fries were like hard sticks. McDonald's would have been better. They ran out of chowder!! On a Sunday evening someone in the kitchen should have been on that when it was getting low. The fish was tasteless and the clams tasted nothing like they do in Ipswich. I think someone should take a trip to New England to see how we cook and serve food and what should be on a menu that is supposed to represent an area. You should have steamers, fresh gulf shrimp and crap legs, the things we eat up North
