Critic's Review

One of the most foolish things you can do in South Florida is go to a Deli at lunchtime. My plan was to go to Poppies for lunch; fat chance of that. There was a line of blue hairs out the door, and there wasn't a table available in the oversized restaurant. Determined to have a late breakfast, I headed over to Gramercy.

There wasn't a spot in the Gramercy parking lot, and it's a big lot and not much else in the shopping center. As I was about to leave someone pulled out and I grabbed the spot.

Inside, there were a few people waiting and I almost left; the host dude spotted me and asked for my name and assured me he's squeeze me in shortly. So I decided to wait.

Gramercy has 2 distinct areas; the front area with a big deli counter and a few booths; I would have preferred to sit in the front, but there was no occupancy.

So I got a bad table in the dining room; my fault for eating at peak time at a Western Delray deli. The table next to me was empty for just seconds in between parties; I grabbed a shot just in time.

One good thing about being right in front of the door is that they server walks by quite often and can check the table. She took my coffee order right away; you get a nice big thermal pot here so you don't have to wait for refills; or worse have someone topping it off when you just got it sugared correctly.

She swung by, I ordered my regular, and she was off. It came out in about 5 minutes.

Gramercy deli eggs

My first impression is that clearly they have the grill too hot as the eggs were scorched. Not too bad but careless nonetheless. The bread came out unsliced, unbuttered and toasted well; the butter comes in a packet but they were big packets and they weren't frozen, so I was able to lather a generous amount on the bread. The bread was actually much better than your typical fare.

There was nothing unusual here; a good amount of quartered and largely unseasoned potatoes, decent sausage (3 links is better than 2 of this size); overall a decent breakfast. The bill came to $8.45 before tip. No gouging here.

I'd previously gotten a chicken salad:

Gramercy sandwich

One thing is that they claim to use Hellman's mayo here, which is certainly better than some others. I tried the cole slaw. Very sweet. Too sweet. I had to pepper it. Typical bad deli cole slaw.

The sandwich looked great. A good solid rye. A nice portion. Shredded chicken. I took a bite. Ugh. Sugar. They put sugar in their chicken salad. There is no sugar in chicken salad.

I've can't remember one deli in NY that put sugar in chicken salad. Another loser. Next please.
