Critic's Review

Fatso's opened last winter in East Boca and they're still open, which is a good sign. My normal pizza day is a Sunday, and even though they tout "Family Night" on their website on Sundays; they're now closed. So I had to wait until I slid my cheat day to a Monday to try it.

Fatso's drew my interest because they have 18 inch pizzas, which everyone who knows anything about pizza knows is the correct size for a pizza.

On their menu they have a Monday special that scores you garlic knots and a 2 litter bottle of soda with a $10 purchase, so I figured I'd get a chance to try the knots. I probably would have given the soda to Zeek, the guy who lives under a tree near my building.

I got to Fatso's about 30 minutes after ordering the pie, so it was ready when I got there. The counter dude put the box on the counter and started to ring up my order; but there were no garlic knots. There were 2 girls eating a large pizza at a table and I noticed that they had knots, so I asked him if you didn't get the knots with take out. He looked at me blankly, and then said "oh yeah, I don't usually work on Mondays, let me get them for you". So now I'm thinking that he thinks I'm stupid, like I can't see that the girls have knots. Of course I wasn't going to wait for him to cook them, so I had to take them with the garlic sauce separately. There was no mention or offer of a soda; I didn't bother to ask about it. This just reminded me of jonathan's around the corner, where they have a big sign boasting "buy one pie get one free", but when I picked up a large pizza there was no mention of another. It's why these places turn over so often and quickly.

When I looked at the pizza, it looked really good. 18" pizzas just look better, and they use the good sausage here.

But like a bikini model who turns out to be a foul-mouthed chain smoker; looks aren't everything. The sausage slices where pretty good, but the plain cheese slices weren't. I added oregano which helped, but still the sauce wasn't sweet enough and there was nothing gooey or good about the cheese. The crust was just right; perfect foldability and cooked properly; but it wasn't a great pizza.

The place has a nice outside "patio", and a couple of tables inside and a big flat screen TV. I'd suggest trying some slices before you spring for a full pie to see how you like it.
