Critic's Review
I was never in Word of Mouth. It was kind of a strange place with a badly antiquated concept; eventually they couldn't hold on. When a burger and craft beer place opened here, I wondered what they were thinking. Like there aren't 100 other similar places scattered about town.
The last time I drove by here there were a lot of creepy people hanging out front that kept me from going in. This time the place was pretty much dead empty. Just the way I like it.
When Word of Mouth started touting their "patio", I thought of a fenced in area in the back. But the patio here is a bunch of tables on the sidewalk out front. There's no traffic on this road in this closed-off area; so it's not like you're sitting on a main road. Still too hot to eat outside.
There were 2 tables occupied so I grabbed a booth in the back. They have some TVs but I wouldn't say there were positioned for watching the game. No CNN or CNBC on any sets, which tells you someone about the operators and their expected clientele.
I ordered an iced tea and tried to make sense of their hand-written menu. The creepy pictures inlaid in the table was the first indication that I hadn't properly done my homework on this place. Ice Tea is served in a big red cup with a straw large enough to work properly.
None of the salads interested me. I decide to just try a burger. The Caddy is a standard offering; I ordered it medium rare with cheddar cheese. I also opted for the tater tots; paying $2 extra for sweet potato fries seemed pretty stupid.
They were playing good music: Credence, Pat Benatar, Kansas, Stones, Boston. Old time Rock and Roll.
The burger came out in 10 minutes.
I didn't particularly like the deep pan as I could tell right away that it was going to make the burger difficult to grab. Obviously not a very good bun; cheap bread exposes itself immediately. Bad pickles. I cut it in half to check the color the the girth.
Properly cooked, but not a $12 burger in any sense. As pre-made likely frozen burgers go, this wasn't bad. The tater tots were quite good; crispy, simple.
The music was good so I ate the burger and read my phone. No refill offer on the tea, but it was a large cup; they can't see into it so they had no idea if I'd finished it or not. My server dropped off my check and then disappeared, strangely. I was the only one in the place at 3pm, yet he never came back to pick it up. Another dude came by; Pat Benatar's 'Hit me with your best shot" was playing and I commented on the good music. "Oh, it will be much different tonight", as he proceeded to tell me about their "Beer, Burgers and Boys" promotion.
Ok, time to go.
Conclusion
When I first saw the menu, I thought the prices where a bit high here, and in fact they are. I got a $10 lunch for $15. The place itself is cooler than I expected, but any place where you might walk into a party with a bunch of guys in thongs is a place that isn't on my list. You can make your own determination on that.
