All you can Eat Stone Crab Claws

Personally, I think that Stone Crab Claws are among the most over-rated, over-priced foods of all time. But people go nutty over them, maybe because it's an in thing to be into. But the market was up 500 yesterday so I felt like I could splurge and I went out for some Claws. I didn't do All You Can Eat, because I'm not so crazy about them that I'm willing to pay more than I'd pay for a Prime Porterhouse. But we all have different tastes.

The 2 places in town that I know of that offer All You Can Eat stone crab claws are Truluck's and Catfish Dewey's. Truluck's charged $75 in 2013 and they run this as a special on Monday nights only; Catfish Dewey's offers the All You Can Eat option every day, all day and the price varies; it's typically $44-$49 for Medium Claws and $60-$65 for large Claws. While Truluck's is a much nicer place, word is that they give you "Medium to Large" claws for the $70 price. So there might be a much bigger difference in price than it seems on the surface, If you want your Claws on a night other than Monday, Dewey's is your only option.

At Dewey's, you can also get 2lbs of large claws (about 8 claws) for $49, which seems like more than enough, particularly when you get a starch side, cole slaw and hushpuppies with them. But if you must stuff yourself with overpriced shellfish, you have some options.

I buy them from a buddy that buys them in chokoluskee daily. By law they have to be cooked immediately so there is nothing to do to them other than to ice them properly. The beauty to me is having a bunch of buddies over for football, sitting down at a bench covered with a tablecloth made out of newspaper and enjoy. I find the meat too delicate to dredge the crab in a sauce, I like melted butter.

I think they charge so much for them because they're seasonal. I am like you, somewhat. I do love eating them each season. For me, if they took away the mustard sauce, I wouldn't want them at all. Having said that, I usually have them twice per season. Once at one of the all-you-can-eat places, and then I have them once at Joe's Stone Crabs in Miami, because, I just love that place. The Flan is out of this world.
