Critic's Review

I hadn't been to this part of town in a while; and I hadn't been to the Latin Bohemia Grill since I said I wouldn't come here again. But these are crazy times.

The place was pretty empty at 1:30pm. Lunch crowds are a thing of the past.

Latin Bohemia Grill

One good thing about social distancing is fewer tables, and it's a real benefit in a place like this. Who wants to hear a bunch of cretins bantering in Spanish 6 feet away.

Latin Bohemia Grill Interior

Tables have no menus and there's no hostess; you have to wait for a server to come over with a place matt / menu and a glass of water. She scampered away without taking my beverage order. A few minutes later she came back to take my order:

I'll have the Churrasco, medium rare with yellow rice, black beans and an iced tea

I didn't bother asking for lemon, since I know they don't have it.

Latin Bohemia Grill Beverages

They've done away with the bread service; or at least none was offered.

The steak came out immediately, and I do mean immediately. They don't even pretend to warm it up. A couple of end scraps to get it up to the proper service weight.

Any notion that these are cooked to order can be quickly dismissed. This is kept-warm well-done. Maybe it was medium rare at 11am.

Latin Bohemia Grill Steak is Not Medium Rare

The plan was to eat half the rice, the beans and half the steak; and take the rest home, but the steak was so bad it couldn't possibly survive another reheating.

Latin Bohemia Grill Churrasco Yellow Rice and Black Beans

The thimble of chimichurri they provide is trash; probably cheap vegetable oil and cilantro.

I like the yellow rice better than white rice, and the beans were cooked exactly right. Not much seasoning, but easily the best thing on the plate.

Latin Bohemia Grill Black Beans

I ate more than expected; the meat at least provided protein; something I probably don't get enough of on my current diet. Protein and fiber for $20.

Conclusion

Over time you forget, and I forgot why I said I'd wouldn't come here again in 2012. In 9 years the only thing that's changed is that they've raised the price $6 and you no longer get bread. For $11.95 you can tolerate a sub-par piece of meat. For $17.95, you go somewhere else.

Latin Bohemia Grill 2011

As Latin Cafes go, Latin Bohemia Grill is over the larger variety. Lots of tables; if you come in after 2pm you'll have your choice of tables as much of the lunch rush is gone. The crowd here are mostly latin workers from surrounding businesses; this is a business district.

Latinbohemia inside

I was in the mood for Ropa Vieja; I'd had the churrasco last time and wanted to try something different.

First off, I hate the service in this place. There's no hostess, so you just sit down somewhere. But it takes a while for someone to notice you. They're very mechanical; they bring over water, and then a guy comes over with bread.

Latin Bohemia Bread

I ordered iced tea and the ropa vieja with yellow rice and black beans, and I pointed out that there was no sweetener setup on my table. They don't speak good english here, so I wasn't entirely sure that he understood. I saw him milling around while I waited, and they annoyance continued as he didn't bring out the iced tea until the food was ready. It's almost like they don't understand how things are supposed to work. I still had no sugar, but instead of getting me a setup with a variety of sweeteners, he brought over a big sugar dispenser. Fine, I don't really do the yellow anymore.

They gave me a big mound of rice but the ropa looked pretty soupy.

Latin Bohemia Ropa Vieja

It wasn't a very good version, not very garlicky or tomatoey. Just sort of like fajitas and gravy.

I don't think it's worth coming to this part of town for this again. If you're not working in the area, there are better choices just about everywhere in town.

Review 12/7/11

The Latin Bohemia Grill reminds me a bit of Las Colinas, in a slightly better neighborhood. It's a modest place, sort of like a diner inside, with glass tables with menus under the class. This must be a south of the border thing, because it seems pretty common in Cuban and Latin restaurants. At least the menus are clean.

I'd seen a menu before I came here, and I'd already decided on the Churrasco; a marinated grilled skirt steak. I'd heard it was pretty big. I also ordered an iced tea. Service seemed pretty good at first, as a server appeared as soon as I sat down and there were a lot of people around who seemed to be working pretty hard. But I ordered iced tea and it didn't come out until the steak was ready as well, so there was a lot of time at the table waiting. I was thinking that they might have forgotten it.

When you order a skirt, you never know if you're getting a big or small piece; this was obviously a big one.

You can choose 2 sides with it and I got yellow rice and black beans. It also comes with garlic bread, which was delivered after I took the picture.

The beans were really good, as was the rice. The steak was marinated and had a good taste; but no chimichurri sauce. I saw some pictures that had it, so I assume that they either forgot or just didn't bother to give me any. If so, that's a big, big miss. A skirt steak without chimichurri just isn't the same. At places like El Tamarindo, the chimichurri is the entire point of the meal.

It wasn't the best cut of meat either, the meat was very fatty and there was more than one mouthful that ended up in a napkin. For $11.95 it's certainly a good value.
