Critic's Review

This is one of the few mainstream diners in our coverage area that I'd never been to; I was on my way back from a failed attempt to have breakfast in Boca (there was an hour wait; I don't wait for eggs), and figured this was a good chance.

I entered the smallish room that was quite loud with cackling; it seems that the lunch shift was getting off and they were all sitting at tables counting their money. I noticed some booths in the back while I waited for the hostess to cash someone out, but she ushered me into the loudness and into a booth in the corner. There was a family of 6 next to me, and all of the cackling right in front of me. I was put here for convenience of her servers, and not for my comfort.

As I pondered the menu, a server came over with a glass of water. I wanted coffee, but he didn't ask. "I'll be right back", she said. She disappeared for awhile, and then re-appeared to take the order of the large party next to me. Ok, this will be a while, I thought. Then she headed off again, to re-appear with an order for another table. So then she came over to take my order; I ordered my usual with coffee. I expected her to rush back with coffee, but no, she had a few more errands to run. This was the longest I ever had to wait for coffee in a diner; usually they ask you as soon as you're seated and make sure you have something while you wait. Also strange was that there was no yellow, pink or blue sweetners on the table; you have to ask for it. It was a good 15 minutes before I had a cup of coffee.

The eggs, however, came out in about 2 minutes; never a good sign.

Olympia Flame Diner Eggs

My hope that they'd have the good sausages were immediately thwarted, but these aren't bad. It was everything else that disappointed. The eggs were not over easy; these were cooked in a small frying pan over high heat and covered. The potatoes were a mixture of inedibly burned pieces mixed with flash cooked fresher pieces that were completely devoid of seasoning or flavor. There's a reason you saute home fries in a bit of fat with onions. It makes otherwise tasteless potatoes taste better. Of course I had no butter on the table either, and no chance of seeing my server again before it was too late. Simply put, this breakfast was incompetently made.

I generously left a dollar for this, and took my $9.45 bill to the register. $10 minimum for Credit Cards. Great. Just get me out of here.
