Critic's Review

I drive by this place 4-5 times a week, and hadn't been here since 2010. It's not the kind of place you want to eat in. I just wanted a bit. I'm making sausage at home so my kitchen isn't available for making lunch.

I didn't want sushi, so I went with the Sukiyaki Lunch Box. The place is a narrow room with just 3 tables inside. It hasn't changed much, if at all, since it's opening. It amazes me how someone can open a small place and just keep it going for years and years without any change.

Sushione inside

No seats at the "bar" here. Just Take Out.

Sushione counter

It took about 10 minutes. They use an old cash register and I didn't even get a receipt (she didn't ask if I wanted one). When it was done a guy called out a number: "49, sukiyaki). There were only 2 people waiting so I knew it was mine. Still operating in the 1990s mode. I expected a little box, but this was pretty heavy for $6.84.

When I opened the box, I was impressed with the amount of food, but not too impressed with the contents. Iceberg lettuce with brown edges, clumpy rice and beef that looked like it came off a steam table in a mall. A container of soup: miso soup is included, although I tend not to like it. A choice would be nice. Chicken broth is cheap.

Sushione takeout

I tasted a piece of the beef and surmised that it was rump roast. Real Sukiyaki is more interesting than this. I don't need to eat this salad, so I loaded up the stuff I wanted into a rice bowl.

Sushione bowl

It was actually a satisfying bowl of stuff; the seaweed was good and the Beni Shoga (the red pickled ginger) worked in well. Nothing I'd order again but it's a cheap meal.

I tasted the soup just to get an idea.

Sushione miso

Tasted like bath water (not that I know how bath water tastes). No thanks on the miso.

Conclusion

I find it somewhat humorous that they have driving directions from Route 95 on their take-out menu; who is coming to this place from 10 miles away? This is a place you stop for take-out when you go to CVS or if you work nearby. People rant and rave about the place, but there's nothing great about it. It's just very inexpensive, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Review 4/21/10

Sushi1 2010

Sushi one is a tiny storefront in a CVS strip mall that you could easily miss altogether if it weren't for all of the people going in and out. At lunch time, its a mob scene in this little space that can barely fit 10 people.

Sushi1 inside

There are 3 tables inside and 2 outside and on a nice day you'll be lucky to get one. Hence, the "take out" in the name of the place. For a tiny place, they have a rather extensive menu; you can get just about anything you want here. The sushi is good and the prices are very low. If you don't eat raw fish and some friends drag you here they have steamed and pan fried dumplings as well as soups. You may have to wait for awhile at lunchtime as they get pretty busy.

Sushi1 sushi

The #2 looks as expected. I'm not a sushi afficionado but its certainly passable if not better than that.

I took out a couple terriaki dinners here a couple weeks ago - it was so bad and inedible I actually did a chargeback via Amex. Calling that horrible Miso soup bath water is spot on. It is a mystery - or a statement about FTL food and the people who live here in general - that this place is always busy and people rave about it. Gimme a break. You gave it too many stars based on your horrible yet accurate review.
