Critic's Review
If you've ever driven down A1A north of Oakland, you've seen Nick's. Its a big place with a very noticable exterior blazing with the colors of Italy. It looks like an old place, but its really quite nice inside. There's a bar area and a dining room downstairs and a "supper club" upstairs where they have dancing on weekends. They have a nice granite bar with a TV and old, traditional Italian music playing.
Their website is so out of date we're not even going to list it. They have coupons that expired a year ago. The hours are wrong. They started serving lunch in January. Lunch is served from 11am to 3pm. At 3pm the Early Bird dinner begins and runs until 5pm.
They give you a lot of food at Nick's. For $8.95 you get a massive portion of eggplant parmesan with plenty of mozzarella, a full mini-loaf of garlic bread and a big bowl of linguine with sauce. Its really 2 meals for a normal sized person.
Execution-wise, the verdict is mixed. The eggplant is excellent; thinly sliced and breaded layers; the sauce is clearly home made but could use some seasoning; they also don't pick out the stem ends of the tomatoes. The linguine is cooked in under or unsalted water and is bland. The bread is messy and you'll soon outgrow your napkin. But the abundance of cheese and the good eggplant leads to an overall satisfying meal. Or should I say meals.
