Critic's Review
Talavera opened last October to much fanfare in the heart of the business district. They claim to be authentic Mexican cuisine. One thing is for sure; its a very nice place. Its a bit out of the way for someone who lives in Fort Lauderdale. But once in a while you find yourself in Miami.
Its unfortunate that parking in this area is such a nightmare, particularly during the day. There are a lot of 30 minute limit meters, which isn't enough time for lunch here. Bring quarters regardless. You'll need 4 or 5 for lunch and 6 for dinner.
Inside, Talavara is a sleek, handsome restaurant. The curvy bar in the front is adorned with sketches of faces from Mexican history; there are big paintings in the rear dominated by the trademark blue. There's an open kitchen in the center where the chef's do their thing.
Unlike Rocco's, Talavera is a full service Mexican restaurant. When you sit down you get black corn tortilla chips and a couple of sauces; a smooth red piquant sauce and a very hot green habanero sauce. Watch out for the green sauce. It packs quite a kick. Water is served in a Carafe; its nice not to have to ask for refills. They have Habiscus Iced Tea which is a deep crimson color and a nice change of pace from Lipton's. For lunch, they have a page of specials, all for $12. They have tacos and quesadillas and some salads. They also had combos; I opted for the half order of chicken tacos and a cup of black bean soup.
What they call "chrispy tacos" are really taquitos to you and me; filled with finely shredded chicken. Frankly, they're uninspiring. The goat cheese spinkle would be better inside. The included guacamole is excellent; fresh and skillfully made. I found myself eating spoonfuls in between each taco. The black bean soup is top notch; a rough puree with bits of black beans and minimum sodium. Its among the best I've had north of the border.
The service here is very good. They make you feel like your business is important to them. The staff here is a little green, but cut them some slack. They try hard and they're very polite and professional.
