Critic's Review
Review 12/20/13
I went in to this place once on a weekend afternoon and it was just a smoky bar, so I walked out never to return. I'd heard that they no longer allow smoking, which put them back on my map. Apparently the "chef" here used to be at the Angle Sea Pub, a place I never considered going to. I saw a photo on their facebook page which looked pretty good.
I wandered in shortly after 2pm and there were no other tables insides; just a bunch of people at the bar. No hostess here; they have a long bar and a few booths; the bar didn't seem like a place where I wanted to eat.
I grabbed a booth and a menu was brought out immediately. The menu was more extensive than I expected; they have a single sheet at the door that is probably counter-productive; the actual menu is much better than what they have posted. I ordered and iced tea and took in the view.
The tea came out; I'd ordered with extra lemon of course; and they do the thin, unsqueezable slices here instead of the convenient wedges. No Splenda. Ugh.
They had a sirius station playing rather loud Christmas Rock. AC/DC's "Mistress for Christmas". McCartney's "The Christmas Song", WHAM!'s "Last Christmas" and Bryan Adam's "Christmas Song". Good stuff. Good music seems to be a theme here; it's a pretty small space but they have a setup for live music. The bar banter was crude; if you have kids don't eat inside or they may be exposed to the kind of talk and jokes that aren't meant for kids (or evolved adults).
They have Fish and Chips as a $9 lunch special, and it seemed like the kind of thing you'd order in a pub like this. It took about 10 minutes.
Certainly not what I expected. A good sized cod filet with quartered potatoes; it certainly had some visual interest to it. Accompanied by tarter sauce and cole slaw; the cole slaw was terrible which was very disappointing as this goes with cole slaw. The fish was flakey but not seasoned; I had to heavily salt this as I ate it.
The coating was a complete failure; it wasn't crispy or light or tasty; and the potatoes weren't "chips" in any sense of the word. They just tasted like quartered potatoes.
Probably better as a bar than a restaurant. I can't recommend the Fish and Chips.
