Cafe Europa Re-Opens on Las Olas

Aug 25th, 2010

The wait is over. Cafe Europa has returned to Las Olas.

Sometimes things that seem bad can be good. When Cafe Europa and O’Haras were closed so that the greedy hotel owners could expand their building into some sort of a 5 star palace, locals were livid. When they failed to obtain financing and ultimately ……

Samba Room Closes

Aug 15th, 2010

Ten years ago, the Samba Room was the hottest spot on Las Olas. Friday nights started and ended at the Samba Room. Four years ago, it was still a pretty hot spot on Friday nights, but on other nights you’d have no trouble getting a seat there. On Friday; they closed their doors for good.

Samba ……

J Mark’s

Jul 26th, 2010   1245 N Federal Hwy Fort Lauderdale

Old time Fort Lauderdale residents can no longer say “Meet you at J’s” without creating a new ambiguity. J Mark’s has opened a restaurant on US1 at the location previously occupied by Bennigan’s.

Anyone who remembers the dingy place that was Bennigan’s won’t recognize the new place. J Mark’s completely gutted the old structure and ……

Big City Brunch

Jul 24th, 2010

Big City Tavern is one of the most popular bars in Fort Lauderdale best known for its bar scene on weekends. What most people don’t know is that they have a brunch menu that’s served on Saturday and Sundays from 11:30 to 2:30pm.

Unless you’ve been in the restaurant and have seen the flyers on ……

Chipotle Mexican Grill Coming to Fort Lauderdale

Jul 22nd, 2010

Chipotle Mexican Grill has started construction on the old Longhorn Steakhouse location in Bal Harbour Square (near Comp USA). There’s no indication yet as to when they’ll be opening.

I’m sure Zona Fresca across the street is just thrilled about it.

Tokyo Blue is a new restaurant and lounge located in the Ocean Manor Resort hotel. Its marketed as a high-end Restaurant and ultralounge offering a mix of steaks, japanese, Thai and peruvian cuisine. In other words, they have no real focus.

The first thing you notice upon walking in is that the place smells like fish. ……

Da Big Kahuna

Jul 3rd, 2010   17 S Ft Lauderdale Beach Blvd #380 Fort Lauderdale

In the space previously occupied by Sloppy Joes, there’s now a Hawaiian themed restaurant. Frankly I’m not sure what the concept is. Their original location is in Hawaii, so that makes some sense. How it fits into the Fort Lauderdale beach vibe remains to be seen.

Its a handsome space with stone-look Kahunas, wicker furniture and ……

Sunday Breakfast at Aruba Beach Cafe

Jun 13th, 2010

When you don’t have a 9-5 job the allure of Sunday Brunch is somewhat diminished. In a town where you can go to the beach for breakfast without the crowds on any given day, there’s rarely a reason to venure out on Sunday and deal with the crowds and the tourists. So when you ……

Solita Thursdays

Jun 11th, 2010

With the demise of Bova Prime, word of the migration of the shiny shirt crowd to Solita has been all the chatter on the Las Olas grapevine. Like most things in Fort Lauderdale, there’s a dearth of information available about it. Solita’s website is an exercise in futility; a tale told by idiots. So ……

Best Burger in Fort Lauderdale

Jun 5th, 2010

BurgerBattle is now complete, and now that a Bar in Wilton Manors not particularly known for their burgers has been crowned “Best Burger in Fort Lauderdale”, what does it all mean? Well it doesn’t mean a thing, but it was some good clean fun for all. No lives were lost, no oceans were polluted, ……

J Mark’s To Open in Fort Lauderdale

Jun 1st, 2010

** Photo 4/10/2010 **

Construction on J Mark’s restaurant is in full gear as the building that was Bennigan’s has been gutted. Judging from the rich decor at their Pompano location, there’s a lot of work to be done to transform the drab Bennigan’s decor. They plan to open in Summer 2010.

See our review of their ……

And yes, you guessed it, Connie Francis will be performing. For those of us who can barely ……

May 17th, 2010

Last night, Las Olas Boulevard hosted the annual Wine and Food Festival, which was held on a Saturday night for the first time. As the festival sells out every year, its not clear why they moved it from Thursday to Saturday. Instead of creating an ultra busy Thursday for area bars and restaurants, they ……

Vicinos Italian Kitchen

Apr 15th, 2010   208 SW 2nd St Fort Lauderdale

Limoncello is closed and Vicinos is here.

From the outside, it looks the same. The same yellow color; the same big window opening out into the sidewalk. But inside things are different. There’s a long, ceramic bar that’s suitable for eating or hanging out. The big square ugly room is gone and replaced with a ……

Apr 11th, 2010

Less than a year after moving up from a roadside trailer to a modest building on an off-street in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Texas Hold’em is raising the stakes and opening a second location at 1025 N Federal Highway. The seeming jinxed space has been home to a string of short-term losers (most recently Opera Restaurant) ……
