Critic's Review

Taormina quietly opened up in the space that used to be California Burgers and Shakes. I spotted this place a few weeks ago, and I've been checking to see if they put up a web site or a facebook page. But nothing. I had no idea what to expect; whether it was a spaghetti and meatballs place or some sort of Italian deli. I parked out front and they had a sign with some specials. Meatball parm or Sausage and Peppers here for $7.50. Ok, I'll bite on that.

Taormina inside

There was no-one in the place and they didn't seem like they were used to too many people being in there. The place has a few tables and some pretty funky music playing, but I was glad I was doing takeout as it's not the kind of place I'd want to eat in. After the 30-second sausage sandwich I'd gotten yesterday at Hot Dog Heaven, this was a lot different. They cooked up the sausage and peppers from scratch on an open stove. It took about 10 minutes but the result was worth it.

Now the sandwich I had yesterday was only $4.95, but this was a lot better. Not a huge sandwich, but there's a big difference when the onions are freshly caramelized. It came with a cold pasta salad that wasn't bad.

It's hard to say what a full-scale dinner would be like here; the menu has all of the classic italian dishes, and you can get a 16oz NY Strip for $39. I'm not sure why I'd come here for a big steak dinner. It seems a bit pricey for what it is; even with the white tablecloths it still would be a stretch to pay Las Olas prices here. It's certainly ok for grabbing a sandwich at lunch, or maybe a $12 lunch veal parm.
