Critic's Review
Far off the beaten path in a little nook neighborhood in Pompano Beach is Chez Porky's. Its right around the corner from Calypso, and I have to wonder why 2 of the oldest places in town that have Jerk wings are so close to each other and so out of the way.
Chez Porky's has a strange mixture of food; all sorts of different chicken wings, BBQ and quite a few cajun dishes. Its difficult to choose a combination of things that go together. As I entered the place there was a guy sitting at a table with a cheeseburger. I'm not sure I'd come here for a cheeseburger (particularly with Jack's next door), but that's another story.
I made the trek out here to try the jerk wings so I had to get an order of those. I also ordered a 1/2 rack of babyback ribs, which come with 2 sides and a salad. I opted for the cole slaw and baked beans. I didn't really want a salad.
When I got the order home, the bag was just a mess. They double wrapped it so it wasn't in the car, but the styrofoam containers were both leaking liquid. Opening the wings; they were just swimming in Jerk sauce.
One thing about Calypso is that they're nice and dry; the seasoning is cooked in. If nothing else that makes the Calypso wings superior. These were also pretty good; but are actually better cold. They give you some spicy blue cheese dressing which actually works with them nicely. I really don't like them wet; but once they dry off they're much better.
The ribs were excellent, if not over-sauced. They were meaty and the sauce is good and not too sweet. They ask if you want your BBQ sauce mild, medium or hot; I'm not familiar with hot BBQ sauce so I went with mild. A good choice.
The cole slaw is pretty good but needed some pepper; I really would rather have had more cole slaw and no salad. I just don't think of having a salad with BBQ. The beans were good also. Not too sweet and a very good sized portion. The meal is well worth the $11.25 price.
There are a bunch of other things that sound appealing on the menu; particularly some cajun shrimp dishes. Its a bit out of the ordinary, and a bit out of the way. I'd take the BBQ over East Coast; although if you're eating in East Coast is much nicer. This place is kind of a dump.
