Critic's Review
As diner-type places go, Original Pancake House is one of the better operations. While the atmosphere isn't any more appealing, they do have some interesting recipes, some of which are quite good. I've noticed that they're not all the same, so I thought I'd take a drive and check out Plantation.
From a physical standpoint, this one is pretty ugly; Delray is the nicest, but this just seems like a diner. The kitchen is right on top of you and there's a lot of people walking around all of the time. There's glass everywhere, which doesn't really add anything to the ambiance.
It's always the same drill at these places; I ordered some coffee and decide what to have. I was going to get the irish omelet, but they warn you that it takes 20 minutes to make an omelet and you don't get potatoes, so I decided on the steak benedict instead. This is your basic eggs benedict with a 6oz sirloin steak instead of the standard canadian bacon.
At first glance, it looks pretty darn good. It was actually made well; the steak was properly medium rare and the eggs weren't hard cooked , the problem was that the steaks here aren't very good. I'd gotten the steak and eggs once before at an OPH, and I thought maybe I just got a bad one. But this one was about the same; thin cut and not a very good tasting steak. The hollandaise was also completely tasteless; I tried it a number of ways and it was just a yellow sauce with no flavor.
I really like the corned beef hash here, and a few other dishes. But I'll avoid the steaks here in the future.
