Critic's Review
Hummus House is open; I was never interested in trying the short-lived "Eat the Tea" that was here before, because I don't eat tea. I don't eat a lot of hummus either, but I can deal once in a while.
First of all, there's no meat here. No Gyros, no real Shawarma. So don't be fooled by the fake meat dishes.
I saw the menu in advance and it seemed a bit pricey. What's interesting is that you can't just get some hummus, and there's no flavors. Just plain hummus. with no meat; you're not dealing with a lot of good choices. They have Falafel for $4.99, but no cup of hummus. So I ended up having to order a falafel pita.
There were 2 girls and a table of weak-looking dudes; the kind of people you expect to find in a vegetarian restaurant One of the women actually got up and pointed out something wrong on the menu as if it was overlooked rather than an attempt to cheat them. People are so gullible! They have one of those annoying POS systems where you have to sign with your finger. I really don't like having to touch a screen to order food.
It's a smallish place with a pretty loud sound system blaring halfway decent tunes, although a scary remake of "Hit me with your best shot" filled me with anger for some reason.
The place is as bare bones as could be. A rectangular room with a bunch of tables. No real service; the counter person brings out your order if you eat in. I wasn't eating in. It took WAY too long to make the pita. A dime got me 13 minutes on the meter and I barely made it.
I stopped off at Publix on the way home; I was back in 25 minutes regardless.
The pita wasn't the standard pocket; this had a piece cut out of the side.
The first thing I noticed was the pickles; an unexpected development. I couldn't really get it open, so I cut in half.
There we are. I tried it with and without the pickles. I didn't really care for the pickles.
The pita bread was excellent, however nothing else was. The falafel had no taste, nor did the hummus. A very bland sandwich indeed. If you told me that this was made with an unseasoned mayonnaise I wouldn't have argued with you. But the big disappointment was the falafel, which was just a crunchy ball of nothing.
Conclusion
This place is way too expensive to be peddling bland hummus and fake meats. Why is it $12 for a Greek salad?
Another place to get $1 worth of food for $12 opens in Fort Lauderdale.
