Critic's Review
It looks like the "New Management" didn't do so well; Julians is being taken over by the Sushi Song guy.
Review 7/10/10
Julians is a small restaurant on the largely deserted NE 32nd street nook. Its 1 block from the 33rd street scene. There aren't a lot of places in this area for breakfast, and Julians serves breakfast until 4pm (despite the printed menu we have which says 2pm).
From the outside Julians looks like a little coffee shop, but its really quite nice on the inside. It looks sort of like a french bistro; the servers here have noticeable french accents as well. The only negative is that they inexplicably have 102.7 playing the "best" of the 60s and 70s. Its a memory lane I'd prefer to avoid mostly. They could also turn down the AC another degree or two.
They have a lot of interesting items on the menu that you won't find elsewhere. For breakfast you can get the standard NY Strip steak, or you can get pork chops or veal. I decided to try the Eggs ala Julian, which are 2 eggs with veal, grilled potatos, mushrooms and onions.
As you can see they don't cheat you on portions here. The menu for some reason says "unbuttered toast" as if there is some boycott of butter, but they do ask if you want it when you order, so no fear. There seems to be an anti-seasoning sentiment here as well, as the veal and potatoes are devoid of seasoning. Nothing that can't be corrected with salt and pepper.
The servers are generally attentive as they keep a keen eye on the small room as well as outside. The total bill for all this including coffee was $10.85. Not bad at all.
