Critic's Review

Henry's China House used to be "that Chinese place next to Bistro Mezzaluna". In the evening, parking for Henry's was non-existent. Now that the Bistro Mezzaluna has moved and the Grateful Palate is closed; this strip mall is empty in the evenings.

I hadn't been to Henry's since 2009, and I'd never eaten inside. Chinese is take out food for me. Chinese restaurants are creepy; the decor doesn't appeal to me, and there are always family members sitting in the dining room. Henry's is no different; the family is assembled at a table in the back of the one room restaurant; it's a lot like eating in some stranger's home.

Henry's is badly dated; remember when fish tanks were "in" decor? Henry's has one, as well as a big mirror, green decor and glass topped table. It's very 1985.

One thing that's good about Henry's however is that their prices are also from 1985. And with their $6.50 lunch special, you get a pot of hot tea; no extra charge. They also have chinese mustard in squeeze bottle, which is damn convenient.

They have most of the favorites available; I went with Beef with Mushrooms and Snow Pea Pods. No soup, but you get a choice of egg rolls

The major criticism was piling everything on one plate with no side plate. I had no place to put the chicken bones, and I had to be too careful to make sure nothing slid off the plate. With chicken wings, you need a side plate. They also gave me a bowl of noodles, but no place for duck sauce. After 54 years in business, you'd think that they have it down by now.

Generally not bad. The rice didn't have that freshly wok'd taste; like they were steaming it in the bad. The pea pods were fresh and crisp, and the wings were plain and deep fried. For $6.90 you can't go wrong.

I'd suggest taking out. It's not a pleasant place, but you'll have to make your own tea.
